Founded in 1528 and granted university status in 1834, the University of Bern stands among Europe's oldest public higher education institutions. Located in Switzerland's capital city, the campus places academic buildings, libraries, sports facilities, and student residences within walking distance. The university owns approximately 115 research centers and medical clinics.
Historic and industrial buildings have been thoughtfully repurposed for academic use. Former chocolate factory and women's hospital structures now serve as modern facilities, earning the university multiple architecture and preservation awards.
Academic strengths include medicine, natural sciences, law, and European philology. Research extends across multiple disciplines, from RNA molecule studies and treatments for complex diseases to international space programs examining planetary life cycles. The university motto "Knowledge creates value" reflects commitment to practical outcomes from theoretical inquiry.
Notable alumni and faculty include writer John le Carré, who studied foreign languages; physicist Albert Einstein, who taught an elective course; theologian Karl Barth; and Anna Tumarkin, the first female philosophy professor.
The academic year operates on two semesters. Autumn semester applications are accepted January through April, spring semester applications from September through mid-December. Instruction is conducted in German. Applicants must provide secondary school certificates and proof of at least two years study at a Russian university. German proficiency requires Goethe-Zertifikat C1, TestDaF with minimum four points, or DSH with minimum two points. All documents require certified German translations.
Tuition costs 690 euros per semester. Monthly living expenses including accommodation, meals, study materials, and transport average 1,200 euros. Bachelor's students are not eligible for scholarships. Six master's and doctoral grants of 1,600 euros each are available through university competition, with federal grants also accessible.
