Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) offers Bachelor's and Master's programs and stands among Asia’s most prominent and forward-looking institutions. Although it became a university in 1994, its origins trace back to 1937, when it began as a trade school in Hong Kong. Today, it continues to expand dynamically.
The university enrolls around 22,000 students. The academic year starts in September and consists of two semesters. Annual tuition is 15,585 USD. International students are provided with on-campus housing costing 1,197–2,129 USD per month; renting privately in Hong Kong is significantly more expensive. Scholarships are available, and financial grants are awarded for success in competitions and academic olympiads.
Instruction for international students is conducted entirely in English, while local applicants may study in Chinese after passing a language examination. Admission requires proof of English proficiency or a prior diploma, followed by a mandatory interview with an admissions representative. This interview, which includes questions about the chosen field of study, can improve an applicant’s chances even with modest academic scores.
PolyU’s campus features a futuristic main building, landscaped surroundings, the largest university library with extensive collections, sports clubs, banking facilities, bookstores, dining areas, and residence halls.
The university is particularly recognized for strong programs in architecture, construction, electronics, IT, journalism, and communications. Aviation receives focused attention through dedicated research institutes and programs. Other advancing fields include railway safety, food industry technologies, and maritime routes, supported by nanotechnology research. PolyU ranks 205th globally and 5th nationally, with many international faculty members.
Notable alumni and staff include Wong Karwai, Alice Mack, Paul Wong, Pinky Lai, and Rebecca Lee Lok Shche. Graduates are highly востребованы by leading global employers, offering strong career prospects.
